The Poem

Vitreous Humors by Laura Elizabeth Hand

I have read poems penned on cancer

And on age, wrinkles and fine lines.

I have missed poetry on migraines

And on the irresistible temptation

Of jamming an icepick in my eye.

Of gouging it out, feeling the pressure ease—

Vitreous humor down my arms.

Can’t you empathize? I want to

Bite something. Grab the skin and the flesh

and the ribs off my back and yank them around

Like a corset, lacing my form in

To poetry from pain, into an hourglass

When time moves slowly, and I ache.

Exploring the Themes

Understanding 'Vitreous Humors'

The poem Vitreous Humors delves into the visceral and raw intersection of physical pain and emotional expression. It confronts the often-overlooked human experiences of migraines and bodily discomfort, juxtaposing these with more commonly explored themes like aging and illness. Through striking and unsettling imagery, the speaker conveys the relentless intensity of pain—describing the desire for release as both a physical and emotional unburdening.

Ultimately, the poem invites readers to explore the connection between the visceral reality of the body and the artistic impulse to find solace and beauty in suffering. It emphasizes the universality of pain while highlighting the deeply personal ways we attempt to articulate and transform it.
