One of the clearest examples of how I approach curriculum and resource design is a document that was built to be used, not simply read: the HACU/HSI Grow with Google Career Readiness Program & NACE Career Readiness Competencies Student, Faculty, and Staff Resource.

The public 2024 edition is a 57-page guide originally prepared by Career Services Director Lisanette Rosario in 2022 and updated by me in 2024. It brings program guidance, career-readiness competencies, reflection activities, digital-skills pathways, career assessments, résumé development, cover letters, LinkedIn, interviewing, and campus supports into a single navigable resource.

At a glance

  • Artifact: 57-page digital/fillable curriculum and resource guide.
  • Design problem: make multiple frameworks, tools, and career-development activities usable by students, faculty, and staff without requiring them to reconstruct the pathway themselves.
  • Methods: curriculum updating, information architecture, framework alignment, activity design, document formatting, navigation, and participant-facing instructions.

Designing for use across audiences

The challenge was not just to gather information. Students, faculty, and staff encounter the material for different reasons and at different points in the career-development process. The guide therefore needed to function as both a sequential learning resource and a reference that people could return to selectively.

The updated resource includes a table of contents; a program overview; NACE competency definitions and behaviors; reflection and mapping activities; career assessments; Handshake and Career Services guidance; the five Grow with Google learning paths; résumé, cover-letter, LinkedIn, and interview materials; rubrics; templates; and career-portfolio guidance.

Curriculum as a connected system

A recurring design principle in my work is to connect learning content to an action the learner can take. In this guide, competency language is paired with reflection and mapping activities; digital-skills content is connected to career-readiness outcomes; and résumé and interview guidance is paired with structured practice and review tools.

That makes the document useful beyond a single workshop. It can support advising, classroom integration, independent student work, professional-development sessions, and follow-up after a career-services interaction.

A public artifact of curriculum and document design

The guide also preserves an unusually concrete record of the behind-the-scenes work involved in educational resource development: information architecture, content updating, cross-framework alignment, participant instructions, document formatting, usability, and the conversion of many separate resources into one coherent experience.

Curriculum exhibit. The public 2024 guide identifies Laura Elizabeth Hand as the updater and combines Grow with Google, NACE career-readiness, Career Services, and applied career-development resources in one 57-page document.
