Standards Check: a reteach-grouping tool
JavaScript · Formative assessment · Browser-based decision tool
This project translates a standards-level instructional decision into a lightweight browser tool: identify which learners need support on which standards, then generate targeted reteach groups without relying on aggregate scores.
The problem
Overall scores can conceal which specific standards a learner has or has not mastered. A standards-level view makes it possible to group learners by the concept that needs reteaching rather than by total score alone.
What the tool does
The single-file browser tool accepts scores by standard, applies an adjustable mastery cutoff, and returns reteach groups for each standard. It requires no installation and can be run locally in a browser.
Why the design matters
The core design choice is to group by standard rather than by aggregate score. That keeps the tool aligned with the instructional action: identify what needs reteaching and who needs it.
Technical approach
const needsReteach = (scores, standard, cutoff) =>
scores.filter(s => s[standard] < cutoff).map(s => s.name);
const groups = Object.fromEntries(
standards.map(std => [std, needsReteach(scores, std, cutoff)])
);
Evidence represented here
The demonstration uses sample data to make the workflow fully inspectable. It shows browser-based JavaScript, interface logic, adjustable mastery thresholds, standards-level grouping, and the connection between instructional decisions and tool design.
Future iterations can add de-identified or synthetic lesson examples, exportable group lists, accessibility testing, and documented timing comparisons where source evidence is available.
